High - Energy Cosmology γ rays and neutrinos from beyond the galaxy

چکیده
Our knowledge of the high-energy universe is undergoing a period of rapid change as new astronomical detectors of high-energy radiation start to operate at their design sensitivities. Now is a boomtime for highenergy astrophysics, with new discoveries from Swift and HESS, results from MAGIC and VERITAS starting to be reported, the upcoming launches of the γ-ray space telescopes GLAST and AGILE, and anticipated data releases from IceCube and Auger. A formalism for calculating statistical properties of cosmological γ-ray sources is presented. Application is made to model calculations of the statistical distributions of γ-ray and neutrino emission from (i) beamed sources, specifically, long-duration GRBs, blazars, and extagalactic microquasars, and (ii) unbeamed sources, including normal galaxies, starburst galaxies and clusters. Expressions for the integrated intensities of faint beamed and unbeamed high-energy radiation sources are also derived. A toy model for the background intensity of radiation from dark-matter annihilation taking place in the early universe is constructed. Estimates for the γray fluxes of local group galaxies, starburst, and infrared luminous galaxies are briefly reviewed. Because the brightest extragalactic γ-ray sources are flaring sources, and these are the best targets for sources of PeV – EeV neutrinos and ultra-high energy cosmic rays, rapidly slewing all-sky telescopes like MAGIC and an all-sky γ-ray observatory beyond Milagro will be crucial for optimal science return in the multi-messenger age.

High-Energy Cosmology
Our knowledge of the high-energy universe will change dramatically over the next several years as new astronomical detectors of high-energy radiation reach their design sensitivities. Besides Swift and HESS, which are already making important discoveries, these include the ground-based imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes VERITAS and MAGIC, the γ-ray space telescopes GLAST and AGILE, and the partic...
متن کاملGalactic sources of high energy neutrinos
The undisputed galactic origin of cosmic rays at energies below the so-called knee around 10eV implies an existence of a nonthemal population of galactic objects which effectively accelerate protons and nuclei to TeV-PeV energies. The distinct signatures of these cosmic accelerators are high energy neutrinos and γ-rays produced through hadronic interactions. While γ-rays can be produced also by...
متن کاملNeutrinos and Gamma Rays from Galaxy Clusters
The next generation of neutrino and γ-ray detectors should provide new insights into the creation and propagation of high-energy protons within galaxy clusters, probing both the particle physics of cosmic rays interacting with the background medium and the mechanisms for high-energy particle production within the cluster. In this paper we examine the possible detection of γ-rays (via the GLAST ...
متن کاملOn heavy Majorana neutrinos as a source of the highest energy cosmic rays
Cosmic ray events beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff represent a great challenge for particle physics and cosmology. We show that the physics of heavy Majorana neutrinos, well defined by their masses, cross sections and lifetimes, could explain the highest energy cosmic rays as a consequence of the galactic annihilation of heavy neutrinos as cold dark matter particles. Galactic nuclei ac...
متن کاملHigh-Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts
— A complete model for the origin of high-energy ( > ∼ 10 14 eV) cosmic rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and implications of this hypothesis are described. Detection of high-energy neutrinos from GRBs provide an unambiguous test of the model. Evidence for cosmic-ray acceleration in GRBs is suggested by the detection of anomalous γ-ray components such as that observed from GRB 941017. Neutron β...
